Closed Communion
by Elder Brian Moore

What is Close Communion?  It is the partaking of the communion service, as instituted by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, with only baptized believers who have been baptized by ministers of the same faith and order. The Primitive Baptist practice close communion and adhere to the words of  Paul who said "be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers."  Some would argue that close communion is not fair and is arrogant, however if a person is baptized by a minister who preaches salvation by works, he has been baptized into a faith of salvation by works. If a person is baptized by a minister who preaches salvation by Grace, he has been baptized into a faith of salvation by Grace. Therefore, the two are unequally yoked and Paul discourages us not to unequally yoke ourselves with unbelievers. According to God's word there is only one Lord, one faith and one baptism, Primitive Baptist believe in Grace doctrine and will only accept a baptism which is consistent to the doctrine of Grace.
It is important and necessarily vital that the doctrine, baptism and communion be consistent. If, for example, one is baptized into a doctrine of works, it would not be consistent to partake in a communion of Grace. With this understanding the Primitive Baptist believe that it is inappropriate to take communion with someone who has been baptized into a doctrine of works. In Hebrews 13:9,10 we read, "Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats which have not profited them that have been occupied therin.. We have an altar wherof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle." This by no means indicates that Primitive Baptist believe that they are the only children of God, it does however state that they believe in the ordinance so much that it has become a  valued and faith honored church ordinance.
